Ucluelet Fishing Report:
Hi everyone, Turk from Reel Time Fishing Charters. We have currently moved our charter boat from Nanaimo to Ucluelet where so far, it has been a very unusual start to the season…, slow. Most of the action so far has been offshore (Big Bank) and most of the fish have been small, including the hali’s. There are however some nice ling cod coming in many of the banks and rock piles that are closer. If it is salmon you are after, chances are you are going to have to take the 40 km trip off shore to find them. And, once finding them, you will have to weed through the smaller ones before picking up a few in the teens.
The story seems to be water temperature. Speaking with many of the guides and adventure tour operators, the water is 3 degrees warmer this year, something that may be keeping the fish (and even whales) away. This could also explain why fish are being caught deeper this season than many of the previous years.
Hopefully, things turn around and the large schools of fish normally found off the famous shores of Ucluelet return. Until then, its off to the big bank weather permitting.
