Nanaimo Fishing Report from Reel Time Fishing Charters, May 14, 2016

What happened to the fish? This is the question many local guides and anglers have been asking over the past week and rightfully so. Typically, the last week in April and the first 2 weeks in May are usually some of the best fishing we see in and around Nanaimo waters. Not this year. This past week (May 9-14), the fish disappeared. Similar reports have been made from Parksville to Ladysmith and even out towards Vancouver where the fishing has been good much of this Spring.

For us at Reel Time, we’ve logged in 15 trips over the last 3 weeks. During the first two weeks (April 25-May 5), we, like many anglers, were putting an average of 3-4 fish in the box in front of the Five Fingers almost every trip. Then the strong northwest came in over the weekend. A trip last Monday afternoon produced a big zero. That was my clue that something had happened. During our next three trips (May 10-12), we moved to Nanoose and Lesquetti Island where we were able to find fish and put at least 1 or 2 fish in the box every outing with many undersized released.

Let’s hope for some larger numbers to show up again soon. We’ll be posting in another few weeks so stay tuned. If you would like a more immediate report or info, please don’t hesitate to call us. Until then, be safe, fish legally, and keep those lines tight 🙂
