Ucluelet Fishing with Reel Time Fishing Charters: July Report 2017
Reel Time Fishing Charters is back in Ucluelet for the summer of 2017. Due to our busy season in Nanaimo this year, our first fishing charter off the west coast of Vancouver Island didn’t happen until July 18 and perhaps for the better. Talking with many of the Ucluelet guides, the start of the July fishery was fair to slow in most of the common places such as Long Beach Bank, Florencia, Wya Point, Inside and Outside Lighthouse Bank. Even at the famous Rats Nose at the Big Bank took some time to produce some decent numbers. However, towards the end of the month, things did begin to pick up, particularly at the Big Bank (Rats Nose) where there was an abundance of Chinook Salmon and Halibut. The only disappointment among anglers then was the amount of smaller Chinook Salmon. You know things are changing when anglers begin to get excited about 10-12lb fish.
With August here, some larger salmon are beginning to show, particularly closer to shore. Over the past week, the Outside Lighthouse Bank has produced some fairly good numbers in the 15-20lb range. Also, Wya Point and the Red Can out in front of the Ucluelet lighthouse has produced some really nice fish, one that weighed in at 36lbs. Halibut fishing has been a hit and miss for many, again, with most of these fish being caught off-shore near the Rats Nose on the Big Bank.
For more info on the where and what and how of salmon and halibut fishing, please feel free to contact us at 250 667 6950. If you wish to book a charter, we still have some openings toward the end of August. Otherwise, be safe, tight lines, and enjoy the rest of your summer!
